| The
Royal College of Surgeons
The
main charity chosen by WOMAC this year is to fund research into
bowel cancer.
Our support of the Royal College of Surgeons is this year funding a
fellowship by Mr John Conti at Southampton General Hospital.
A first class surgeon Mr Conti is studying the interaction between
colon cancer cells and how they spread and grow in the liver. He will
be looking at specific enzymes in bowel cancer with the ultimate aim
of preventing cancer spreading into other organs.
He will be working with Professor John Iredale who has a distinguished
track record in liver cancer and Professor John Primrose, the professor
of surgery at Southampton.
The Royal College of Surgeons tells us that Mr Conti is a very distinguished
surgeon and in 1999 he won the Hallett Prize for the best candidate
in its exams.
WOMAC is proud to have been able to donate £20,000 to the Royal
College of Surgeons to fund such vital research.

Hospital Cancer Unit Appeal
The
Kingston Hospital Cancer Unit Appeal is a major campaign
to raise £3.5 million to build, equip and maintain a specialist
unit to support cancer care at Kingston Hospital.
The unit will be dedicated to Sir William Rous, Chairman of the Hospital
who died from cancer in May 1999.
WOMAC's donation of £10,000 will be allocated to building
and equipping the complementary therapy unit.
Treasurer of the appeal Richard Sharp was on hand at the WOMAC
party to accept a cheque for £10,000 from chairman Liz
Turner and guest Rory Bremner. |

| Youth
Cancer Trust The
Youth Cancer Trust is dedicated to providing holidays for young
people between the ages of 14 and 25 who are all patients suffering
from cancer and attending any hospital in the UK.
Each person is selected by his or her doctor. Most are between treatments
and on medication which they are able to handle themselves, as they
do at home.
The breaks are designed to be fun for the youngsters, who can be
accompanied by a member of their family or friend.
Activities are organised from bowling to horse riding and making
friends with other youngsters enables them to support each other
outside of the charity network.
The £8,000 from WOMAC will fund 25 holidays this year. |
