Marie Curie Cancer Care

In 2004, WOMAC sponsored two Marie Curie Nurses for a year as a tribute to our friend Lynda Sheridan (who you may know as Lynda Shewan). These two nurses worked for a minimum of 81 hours per month in the Surrey area.

Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, free, to allow terminally ill people to stay at home, supported by their families rather than go into hospital.

The Nursing Service works across the UK in partnership with the local NHS to ensure that the care patients receive is part of an overall package devised by the District Nurse.

In 2003 Marie Curies Nurses provided 850,000 hours of care to almost 15,000 people. With the large majority of this care being provided overnight in shifts of nine hours, this means that on average a patient would have received six nights of care.

The service is particularly vital because up to 90% of cancer patients would prefer to be cared for and die at home.

WOMAC raised a fantastic £25,000 for this charity in 2004.
