Professor D Cunningham's Research Fund

£29,000 raised by WOMAC was donated to Professor Cunningham's Lymphoma Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital. This is a tribute to our friend and colleague Russell Bulgin, the brilliant journalist who lost is fight with lymphatic cancer in 2002.

WOMAC was able to fund a research nurse working Professor Cunnigham for one whole year. Professor D Cunningham's Research Fund was established to facilitate research into the cause and treatment of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract such as the stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver, and also cancers of the lymphatic system which are called lymphomas and include Hodgkin's disease. This work is carried out at the Royal Marsden Hospital which itself is committed to the research and development of new and innovative treatments for cancer.

Most of the donations are used directly to help in the laboratory research, diet research and the research and treatment of patients. Many patients receive their treatments through clinical trials. Clinical trials are designed to advance the care of patients with cancer by evaluating potentially new treatments. In order to carry out clinical trials successfully, research nurses and research doctors work with the patients to explain the nature of the clinical trial, and also gather all necessary information. Many of the research nurses and research doctors are paid directly from the Research Fund.

WOMAC has received the following letter from Professor Cunningham:

Words cannot describe the enormous gratitude that we all feel towards WOMAC, and all the hard work that has lead to the incredible donation of £29,000 which has been paid into my Research Fund, held here at the Royal Marsden. Such a substantial donation will make a real difference to what we can achieve in the next twelve months, hopefully pushing forward the frontiers of research into lymphoma. As a disease, lymphoma is, for reasons we do not understand, increasing in incidence in the UK, and although we can already do a great deal for many patients with this condition, there are still some patients for whom the cure is elusive. Our objective is to improve the cure rates as soon as possible and as much as possible. Please extend my thanks to everyone at WOMAC for their hard work, commitment and extraordinary generosity.

This has all been an incredible tribute to Russell.

Kind regards,

Professor David Cunningham

Since this letter was received, we have been able to give another £1000, so reaching our target of £30,000.
